 Tomasz Stanko

Often it is said that music is the universal language. While I think that statement requires some qualifications beyond the scope of this paragraph, I also think that the Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko is living proof that the language of jazz can be spoken eloquently by someone not born on American soil. From his first forays into free jazz in 1962 to the elegant expressions of his current quartet, Stanko has developed a voice that speaks of pain and joy, freedom and constraint, clarity and mystery.
