Uri Caine grew up surrounded by Philly Funk and the richly fertile Philadelphia jazz scene, and wanted nothing more than to be a jazz pianist. At age 12 he began studying with Bernard Peiffer, a French-born pianist who at each lesson refused to teach Caine jazz chord changes until he proved that he had practiced his Bach and Beethoven. Thus the seeds were sown for the musical mashups that Caine creates today... Bach, Beethoven, Mahler, Gershwin, burnin' Philly Funk, and more... Photo: Bill Douthart |
