 Billy Bang

When kids in his Bronx neighborhood first nick-named him after a cartoon character, Billy Bang didn't like it. But the name stuck, and nobody calls him William Walker any more. Bang's life has taken many twists and turns - from Mobile, Alabama to Harlem and the Bronx to a New England prep school...and from the jungles of Viet Nam to a life of comfort in Berlin. Along the way, music has sustained him through both ups and downs. Hear him tell it like it is...    Photo: Alan Nahigian

 John Lindberg

Not many sixteen-year-olds know what they want to do with their lives, but John Lindberg did. Once he heard recordings of the greatest bass players in jazz driving the music home with their thunderous power, he knew exactly what he wanted to do. So he took the extraordinary steps of dropping out of a Michigan high school and moving to where his musical heroes were - New York City. From there, his music has taken him all over the world as both a bassist and a composer.
