 David Harrington

1973 was a very important year for David Harrington. Inspired by both politics and by new music he was hearing he formed Kronos, the group that almost single-handedly broke the mold not just for string quartets, but for contemporary classical music ensembles of all kinds. Thirty-four years later, Harrington is still at it - breaking molds, forging new ground, and most importantly, making beautiful music. Before a recent UCLA Live gig, I spoke with him about all these things and more...

 Hamiet Bluiett

Hamiet Bluiett's birth in Lovejoy, Illinois, was auspicious for the world of music. Founded in 1829 by fugitive slaves from nearby St. Louis, Lovejoy was named for the abolitionist Elijah P. Lovejoy. Today it remains the oldest African-American town in the U.S. When he was young, Bluiett wanted to play the baritone saxophone but Lovejoy didn't have enough saxophones so he was given a clarinet instead. Luckily for the bari and for us, Bluiett eventually got his bari. Tune in and listen to the results...
