Notes from the Western Edge is a collection of audio profiles of musicians working on the edges of Jazz, New Music, Electronics, and the sonic spaces in between.
   Produced in Los Angeles by Richard Paske, NFWE was published monthly from January, 2006 through July, 2007 and now includes 38 profiles, with more to be added on an occasional basis. To listen, use the ISSUE menu or click on a name in the Artist list on the right.

 Joe Zawinul

For almost 50 years Joe Zawinul (1932-2007) stood the jazz world on its ear.
    From his earliest work with Dinah Washington thru his nine years with Cannonball Adderley; from In A Silent Way with Miles Davis thru the global musical swath cut by Weather Report to his current band the Zawinul Syndicate, Joe Zawinul stands as one of the music's true giants.
   In this intimate and revealing profile, Zawinul touches on topics both musical and personal - meeting Miles Davis, practicing with Ben Webster and Coleman Hawkins, playing for Duke Ellington, reuniting with family in Vienna on the snowy night he composed In A Silent Way.
