 Carla Bley

Carla Bley's music offers a wealth of textures in sound - the graceful elegance of her song Ida Lupino, the quirky gait of King Korn, the epic sweep of her opera Escalator over the Hill (with lyrics by Paul Haines), the pedal-to-the-metal roar of her big band, the sinewy strength of her current quartet - all of it bearing the unmistakable stamp of her unique compositional voice. It is music exquisitely crafted and music with an emotional current that runs deep.
Carla Bley - a true American original.

 Fred Frith

There must be something in the water over there. Three of the most original innovations in the art of guitar playing have roots in British soil - the psychedelics of Jimi Hendrix (an American who developed his sound in England), the craggy pointillism of Derek Bailey, and the other-worldly sonic explorations of Fred Frith.
But that's not all Frith does. He co-founded the seminal art-rock band Henry Cow, kicks out the jams with Bill Laswell in Massacre, has composed scores for ROVA saxophone quartet and the Arditti String Quartet, and more, and more.
There must be something in the water over there...
