Chris Potter
Since his boyhood in Columbia, South Carolina, Chris Potter has been enamored of the saxophone. Hearing a recording of Paul Desmond is what did it for him initially, but Potter absorbed many other musical influences as well - the Beatles, the Blues, Balinesian gamelan music, Joni Mitchell, the Mothers of Invention - the list goes on and on. After moving to New York City at age 18, Potter simultaneously worked with be-bopper Red Rodney, and with younger players current on the Downtown scene. Since then he's traveled the world with Dave Douglas, Dave Holland, Steve Swallow, and Steely Dan. We caught up with him while he was on the road with his "Underground" bassless quartet.

Larry Ochs
In the 1960s Larry Ochs was launched with a blast into the world of improvised music when he heard the Sun Ra Arkestra for the first time in a tiny basement club in Philadelphia. Both the freedom and the unbridled power inherent in Monsieur Ra's brand of sonic exploration drew Ochs into a new world of sound and structure through improvisation on the saxophone. After a cross-country trip landed him in San Francisco he continued his explorations, eventually co-founding the ROVA saxophone quartet in 1977. ROVA is still going strong today, but Ochs is involved in many other projects as well with musicians such as Fred Frith, Miya Masaoka, Lisle Ellis, Don Robinson, and Saadet Turkoz.
